Congratulations to HDC - 2017 Champions
Posted Aug 24, 2017

Congrats to HDC who topped DHS in the best of 3 final with a 6-4 victory.  After leading 6-0, DHS battled back and had runners on with 1 out in the 7th, but HDC held on to capture their 2nd Championship and first since 2014.  DHS won game 1, HDC won games 2 and 3.

Pictures coming.

Regular Season Homestretch
Posted Jul 10, 2017

As we have moved past the July 4th break, we are rapidly approaching the playoffs!

For those new to the League, the playoffs are a single elimination tournament until the finals when it becomes a best of 3 for the Kevin McAuliffe City Softball Championship.

The team who is ranked lower (the better record - e.g. Seed 1) is automatically the Home Team.  There is no mercy rule and a winner is required.  The schedule gets updated daily with the results and it becomes a very exciting time to follow.

Revision to Existing Rule
Effective as of June 2, 2017, the following rule will be revised for Rule 5.11.

The main change is that the team without a female player batting 9 or more players will incur a penalty on every 10th batter.

Each team must have at least one (1) female player on the field and in the offensive lineup at all times during the game. A female as an Extra Batter does not fulfill this minimum requirement. No team may go longer than 12 batters without putting a female player up to bat. On any occasion when a female player comes to bat after the batter ahead of her in the lineup has walked, ASA rules for “co-ed” competition requiring that the female batter automatically also be given a base-on-balls by the umpire shall not be applied, and the female batter shall take an at-bat. 1.In the event a team has 8 or more players, but a female player is not available at the start of the game, a game may start with the team incurring the following penalties:
2.The team will lose home field advantage
3.The team will place the missing player at the top of the lineup and incur a penalty of 2 outs each time the player is scheduled to bat. Outs may carryover for future innings.
4.The team will play with 8 players in the field
5.The McGowan Rule will apply if there is an injury

Rules Reminder
Posted Jun 1, 2017

Please note the followng from Rule 5:

  1. Each manager shall present to the umpire and the opposing manager a lineup card prior to the game, listing name and position of each player.
  2. As of the 2015 Season, teams may bat up to 14 players, 10 traditional hitters, 1 DH and 3 Extra Hitters. It is not required to bat all 14, but is an option afforded to the Captains. The batters will be treated like Extra Hitters and may play the field. Batters may be initially identified by the initials EH (Extra Hitter) or DH (Designated Hitter). There may only be one DH per team.
  3. Each team may have a defensive alignment of 1 to 10 fielders, including a short-centerfielder.
  4. Each team must have at least eight players, on offense and defense, to start the game in order to avoid a forfeit according to the provisions of Rule 3.5.
  5. Each team may elect to start with nine players on either offense or defense, and then add either a tenth fielder-batter; a tenth batter; or a tenth fielder-batter and an eleventh batter after the game has begun, provided any such additional players entering the game are placed at the bottom of the team’s batting order. This also applies when teams have the minimum of eight players.  A team may play with 8 players throughout the game. It will not be an automatic out when the 9th position in the order is scheduled since the team will already be penalized with a limited number of fielders.   See 5.11 for additional clarification.

        3. The team will play with 8 players in the field

Early Season Reflections - Seeking feedback on the Bonzi experience . . .
Posted May 13, 2017

It is necessary in life to take calculated risks and throughout the 16+ years that I have run the League, I have always been willing to try new things with the goal of improving the League.  Each year, I have attempted to add a new element as the League has changed through the years.

Over the last few years, we have had an All Star Game; adjusted and created additional rules; annually raised money for autism; transitioned to a new umpire chief  and more.

Culminating with last season, it has been focus to improve the League's communications.  I selected the Bonzi platform after much consideration and analysis.  My success criteria was to enable more timely website updates for schedules, standings and score reporting; Increase our mobile presence; improve roster reporting of each team's members; empower captain’s to capture and manage team attendance; and position the League to accept payments electronically.  It had been my goal to immediately transition over to the core website, www.gwhynot.com, to Bonzi, but like having the independence.

I am now two months in working with the Bonzi platform and I am seeking feedback.  My goal was to improve the experience and make things easier on myself.  It has been a large learning curve as I have had to adapt to support key features I have built in my custom database for the League through the years.  For example, postponed games are a challenge as I have to create additional games and have your opponent appear as Postponed.  Additionally, the standings and score reports which I have used do not exist.  Additionally, the strength of schedule statistic (OPP) does not exist.

All of these items have caused a delay in creating the complete schedule and I have finally integrated back to my underlying database.  Over the next week, I expect to publish the synchronized view on the existing www.gwhynot.com website.  At this point in the season, I am uncertain if the large investment, both financially and time invested, we will continue with the platform, but I'm curious to receive your feedback.

As an aside, I manage a number of youth team's and also a number of youth divisions.  We have a number of apps and they are critical to our success.  I am not certain if Bonzi is the best solution for our League, but I will also push to improve the League.
